"I—I just don't know if I can do this!" Matthew whispered in a panic as Alfred attempted to fix his tie.

"Of course you can bro! You love her right?!" Alfred laughed, showing a bit of frustration with the red fabric.

"More than anything GAHK--" Matthew gasped as Alfred pulled a little too tightly.

"Then it should be no problem, mon ami." Francis said, swatting Alfred's hands away from the Canadians neck. He loosened the tie's grip, allowing him some oxygen, and adjusted it into place. He then stepped back to admire his handiwork.

"B—but what if I mess up, or slur my speech, or—What if she says no?" Matthew's heart twisted at the very thought.

"To you? No way, bro-hah! You look just like me, and who on this earth could turn down such a handsome face?" Alfred admired himself in the mirror.

Matthew began to breath heavily. "I can't. I can't do it. Not tonight anyway. Some other night maybe…"

Francis put his hands on his hips. "Matthew, you have been saying that for the past month. Tonight is the night! Your two year dating anniversary! If you don't do it, tonight, mon Dieu, you two will never get married!"

Yes. Tonight was the night Matthew was going to propose to you. If he could get over his terror of the ordeal. He loved you more than anything, but the thought of asking you that four word question nearly made him have an anxiety attack.

"Besides," Alfred assured him. "Me and Francis will be following you guys around. If you start to blow it, we'll whoosh in and save you!"

"Oh God. I didn't think I could get anymore terrified." Matthew whispered, imagining the noisy American and the perverted Frenchman crashing the date.

Francis looked up at the clock on the wall. "We should get going. (Name) is probably already waiting for you!"

*Le time skip brought to you by the car drive to your apartment*

Matthew knocked on the door.

"Oh! Come in!" Your voice shouted from inside. Matthew tucked the velvet box further into his coat pocket as he opened the door. He nearly gasped at what he saw.

There you were in all of your beauty. Your (color) locks framing your face, your red dress conforming to your graceful curves. A thin silver chain around your neck, a tiny ruby in the shape of a maple leaf dangled from it. You were stunning. Well, you always were in Matthew's opinion.

"How do I look?" You smiled up at him, kissing him on the nose.

Matthew blushed furiously, his heart beat quickening. "Beautiful."

You took his arm. "Shall we go?"

He nodded and the two of you walked out of the door.

*Time skip brought to you by Alfred's cowlick*

Mathew had convinced you to walk to the restaurant. It was more eco-friendly anyway and you enjoyed the beautifully lit river canal, the lantern lights making the water shine.
You snuggled closer to him, gripping his arm firmly.

"Can you believe it's already been two years, Mattie?" You sighed happily.

"It's all gone by so fast." He smiled.

"Oh my God, this is taking too long!" Alfred huffed from their position on a bench.

"They're just talking and stuff!"

Francis looked over his newspaper at the lovely couple and sighed.

"It is so romantic."

"Ah screw romance! When is he gonna ask?"

"It has only been like minutes, idiot." Francis frowned at the American. "And quiet or she'll hear you!"

"Tch! Puh-leease! I am the master of stealth." He grinned before hopping over the bench and into the neighboring shrubbery. Francis shook his head.

"So where exactly is this place Mattie?"

Matthew looked up, pointing at a very tall tower.

"It's—uh—that." He smiled.

"Oh my gosh! All the way up there?"  You gasped.

"Yes. You don't have a secret fear of heights do you?! B-because if you do we can go somewhere else ImeanIwouldn'twantyoutobeabsolutelyterrifiedonour2ndanniver--"

You cut of his ramblings with a kiss on the cheek. "It's perfect Matthew! The view should be amazing!"

And it was. The tower had a giant observatory room along with a restaurant at the very top. You and Matthew, however, decided on a roof seating. And you were so happy you did.

The entire city could be seen, like a sea of lights.

"Oh Matthew this is so beautiful!" You breathed as you looked over to him. "Matthew! Are you okay?"

Matthew had grown really pale, his body slightly trembling as sweat poured down his fore head.

"Y-yes! I'm fine!" He whispered in a nervous smile.

"Are you afraid of heights?" You touched his shoulder.

"N-nno! I'm just so happy to be here with you." He whispered again, taking your hand.

"The man's a nervous wreck!" Alfred whispered to Francis from their table.

"How could this be? I thought I had trained him so well!" The Frenchman sighed as the waiter arrived at your table.

"What will the lovely lady be having this evening?" The waiter gave a flirtatious smile at you.

You giggled. "Um, I don't know. Matthew what do you think I should get?"

Matthew pointed to a spot on the menu. "Well—"

"If I could make a suggestion." The handsome waiter interrupted. "I would go with the chicken parmesan. It is our chef's specialty."

"Oh, thank you. I'll have that then." You smiled, completely oblivious to the waiter's flirting. Matthew, however, couldn't help but notice.

"I love your dress by the way." The waiter said sweetly. "It fits you extremely well."

You blushed a bit and looked over at Matthew, who was frowning up at the server. "Matthew, sweetie? What did you want?"

Matthew looked at you then down at the menu, whispering something.

"I'm sorry, sir?" The waiter leaned in closer. Matthew whispered a bit more harshly, still too quiet for the waiter's ears. "What?"

"He said he'd like the grilled salmon." You smiled at your boyfriend. He seemed quiet to nearly everyone else, but you could always hear him just fine.

"Alrighty then." The waiter scribbled it down on a piece of paper. "Be right back with your drinks."

Before he left, Matthew caught him throwing a wink your way. His insides suddenly burned with jealousy. He let it pass however. Tonight was special, something that you'd both remember. He didn't want it ruined by some maple-sucking waiter. He reached down into his pocket, his fingers brushing the small velvet box.

He swallowed the lump in his throat, building up the courage to speak.

"(Name)?" He whispered.

You looked up at him, curious. "Yes, Mattie?"

He was shaking like a maple leaf. "Do you remember how we met?"

"Well, let's see. I was at the mini mart. I didn't see you and we crashed into each other." You giggled. "There was maple syrup everywhere."

He smiled, feeling a little bit more confident. "You helped me clean up. You didn't even know me. You--"

"Your drinks!" an obnoxious voice cooed. The waiter set the two glasses on the table. You looked up and smiled.

"Thank you."

"I forgot to ask you guys if you wanted any desert earlier." The waiter chuckled, his eyes locked onto a specific area of your chest. Matthew gritted his teeth.

"Do you guys have any pumpkin pie?" You looked over your menu.

"I don't think so. But I'm sure I could get the chef to make one." He smiled.

"Thank you!" You grinned.

"Anything for you, dear lady." He said as he walked off.

Alfred watched as the waiter walked off. "Dammit, Matthew! You just gonna let that punk hit on your lady like that? Maybe I oughta go back in that kitchen and teach someone a lesson!"

"You'd be too distracted by the food and forget all about him." Francis chuckled as he took a bite of his pasta.

"Anyway, you were saying Matthew?" You could see the quiet irritation in your boyfriend's eyes.

Matthew allowed the anger to pass again. He straightened his tie, nervousness creeping back up on him.

"(Name). These last two years have been the happiest time of my life. Before you came along, I felt invincible—invisible! But, uh, you noticed me. We've grown to love each other very much." He reached for his pocket. "And I want to ask you--"

"Food's here!" Your waiter arrived with your plates. Matthew bit his lip in fury. He had eaten here before and there was NO WAY they'd ever gotten his food out here that fast.

"Grilled salmon for you." He sat the plate down in front of Matthew. "And for the lovely lady, chicken parmesan."

You nodded. "Yes thank you. Now Matthew--"
The waiter leaned over the table, interrupting you.

"So are you two a couple or are you single?"

Oh, maple.

That was it.

Before Matthew knew what he was doing he's was out of his chair and had the waiter by the collar.

"LISTEN HERE YOU MAPLE-SUCKING CREEP! SHE IS NOT SINGLE! SHE IS WITH ME! I AM HER BOYFRIEND! AND IT IS OUR TWO YEAR DATING ANNIVERSARY WHICH CURRENTLY YOU ARE RUINING! I WANTED TO HAVE A NICE QUIET ROMANTIC EVENING SO I COULD ASK HER TO MARRY ME BECAUSE I LOVE HER AND WANT TO SPEND THE REST OF MY MORTAL LIFE WITH HER! NOW IF YOU WOULD PLEASE STOP FLIRTING WITH HER AND ONLY SPEAK TO US WHEN YOU'RE ASKING IF WE'D LIKE MORE ICE OR A REFILL! GOT IT?!"

The waiter, pale as a ghost, nodded franticly, stumbling off when Matthew released him.

Matthew glanced around. The entire rooftop was staring at him, including you. Francis was gawking and a piece of hamburger fell from Alfred's jaws. Off in the distance a handful of houselights turned on. From the elevation, the whole city must have heard his little rant.

Matthew immediately flushed and took a quick seat back in the chair. Oh maple why did he do that?!?! His face was as red as Antonio's tomatoes.

"Matthew?" Your voice was a bit shocked. "You were going to propose to me?"

He nodded furiously, too embarrassed to speak. He reached down into his pocket and pulled out the box, opening it for you to see. You gasped at the ring. It was small, yes, but that didn't matter. It was the most beautiful thing you'd ever seen.

"Are you… still going to propose to me?" You giggled.

Matthew nodded again, face still red, and got down on one knee. He didn't even get the chance to ask before you jumped onto him.

"Yes of course I will!!!"

A round of applause echoed from the roof top tables.

"WHOO MATTIE'S GETTIN' SOME TONIIIGHT!!!!" Alfred fist pumped. Francis smacked him in the head as he dabbed a napkin to his tear-filled eye.

"I love you Matthew." You whispered as you brought your lips to his.

"I love you, too, (Name)." He smiled.
